Hiking

Schlossberg-Tour:
a premium trail from the door

The Schlossberg-Tour is a premium hiking trail certified by the German Hiking Institute (Deutsches Wanderinstitut) and was Homburg’s first. It starts and finishes at the large wooden cross in the car park opposite the Vauban fortress, around 140 m from the hotel. Right at the beginning the route passes our hotel and goes down the steps to the entrance of the Schlossberg caves.

From there it leads through the woods east of Homburg: along the Felsenpfad rock path to the Stumpfer Gipfel with the remains of a Celtic place of worship, to the Karlsberg pond with its Kneipp pool, past the ruins of Karlsberg Palace, through the Lambsbach valley and on to the Merwoog lake with the ruins of the Merburg. For a short stretch the trail crosses into Rhineland-Palatinate.

The trail can be walked all year round and 88% of it runs on natural paths. The official route pages recommend finishing with a visit to the caves and our terrace. If you would like to stay the night, our Wanderlust package includes dinner, a hiking map and a boot-cleaning service.

Roman Museum
Schwarzenacker

In the Homburg district of Schwarzenacker you will find an open-air archaeological museum. Part of a Gallo-Roman settlement has been excavated and reconstructed here; it was founded under Augustus and destroyed by the Alemanni in AD 275/276. Among the buildings are the “House of the Eye Doctor”, a house with a pillared cellar, a taberna and a bakery.

There is also a Baroque garden with a reconstructed Gallo-Roman temple and the Baroque Edelhaus, built around 1725, which shows Roman finds and some 30 late Baroque paintings. The drive from the hotel takes about 13 minutes (7.8 km).

The museum is open daily from 10am to 4pm in March, and from April to October from 9am to 5pm on weekdays and 9am to 6pm at weekends and on public holidays. It is closed from November to February. Admission is €7 for adults, and free with the Saarland Card.
